Octopus
« on: September 28, 2011, 02:37:06 pm »
I went snorkelling yesterday (am just on my way home from Cyprus) and I've always wanted to catch a glimpse of an octopus, there was supposed to be one in a cave somewhere else I visited but I never saw it.
I was snorkelling along and saw a movement and realised it was an octopus. It was quite big, probably about 3ft across if its tentacles were stretched out. I spent ages watching it, moving about, matching its colouring to whatever it was on, putting it's tentacles down little holes in the rocks, spreading out then scrunching up, even swimming around for a little while. Eventually it sort of scrunched itself up into a bit of a dip in a rock and you'd never have spotted it if you'd been swimming along, perfectly matched to the white, sandy rock.
Equally amazing when I went back after lunch I spotted it again.

I've seen one once when snorkelling, but I only caught a glimpse if it then it was gone.  I would love to see one properly.

We did have an old disposable underwater camera but I never dreamed I'd see anything so exciting so didn't take it and then never thought for a moment that I'd see it again after lunch!  :D
